I’m bringing you an easy and quick DIY racerback tank top today! I finished this t shirt refashion in less than an hour! And I love how it turned out! This is definitely going to be one of my go-to gym tops, it looks great with a strappy sports bra.

I made this tank top out of an old Harley Davidson t shirt I got as a hand-me-down when I was in elementary school…this shirt is old… and it had a huge hole in the armpit from me wearing it too much, so it was destined to become a tank top.

So, grab your old t shirt and your sewing machine and let’s get started!

Instructions:

First, draw out a racerback shape onto your t shirt with fabric marker or chalk. You can either eyeball this or try it on and have someone help you.

Next, cut about 1/2 inch beyond the lines you drew (this extra 1/2 inch is your seam allowance).

Then on one of the armholes, fold along your chalk line and pin it in place, hiding the raw edges inside the shirt.

Next, sew along the pinned edge with either a zigzag stitch or double needle. Repeat this process with the other armhole. It should look something like this:

Now we just need to make the little band to pull the back into a racerback shape. To make the band, cut a 4 inch by 5 inch rectangle out of the leftover material from the sleeves.

Then fold the rectangle in half with right sides together (fold hamburger direction, so the two shorter 4 inch sides are lined up along the top). Pin the 4 inch ends together.

Sew the end that you pinned to form a tube and trim you raw edges near the stitching.

Now turn the tube right sides out so that the raw edges are hidden inside and iron it with the seam in the center. Like this:

Now wrap this loop around the fabric at the back of the shirt with the seam to the OUTSIDE and pin the ends together.

Next, sew the ends together and trim the raw edges close to the stitching.

Then turn the loop right sides out so the raw edges and center seam are hidden inside.

And the last step! Just twist the loop around so that seam you see in the photo above is towards the inside of the shirt.

And you’re done!
