Today we’re talking about one of my absolute favorite sewing tools, especially when it comes to sewing swimwear – my loop turner!

My loop turner makes my life infinitely easier when it comes to turning straps for swimwear, belt loops, ties, and things!

It’s much faster for turning straps than using a safety pin and will work for just about any straps you need to turn unless they are super long.

I have a short video tutorial below showing you how I use my loop turner to turn straps – but if you prefer the written version, that’s down below the video!

THIS is the loop turner I have (*affiliate link*).

Ok, let’s get into the tutorial!

For this tutorial I’m using a swimwear strap as an example – I made this strap with a strip of swimwear material and it has 1/4 inch elastic in the seam. So it just needs turned right sides out and it will be ready to use in a swimsuit!

The end of a loop turner has a small hook that is sharp enough to poke through fabric and it has a little piece of metal that flips up and down to either close or open access to the hook.

So the first step is to slide the loop turner into one end of the fabric tube, hooked end first. Scrunch the fabric around the loop turner until the hooked end is coming out the other end of the fabric. Make sure the hinged piece of the loop turner is down so that the hook is exposed.

Then hook the end of the fabric by poking the sharp end through the fabric. If your fabric is very thick and the loop turner can’t poke through, you can cut a small slit in the fabric to hook with the loop turner.

Next, start pulling the loop turner back down through the tube, pulling the hooked end of the fabric with it. At this point the hinged piece of the loop turner will be up to keep the hook from catching on other areas of the fabric. You may have to use your fingers to help get the fabric started going down through the tube.

Once the fabric has been started, it should be pretty fast and easy to just pull the end of the loop turner to pull the end of the fabric through the tube until it starts coming out the other end.

Once you can see the right sides out end of the fabric you can unhook the loop turner and just use your hand to finish pulling the whole thing right sides out – and you’ve got a beautiful strap!
