What we’re talking about today is one of my favorite sewing topics – altering patterns! I seriously think that having a collection of basic patterns and altering them to get the style and fit you want is one of the best ways to save money on patterns AND increase your skills when it comes to pattern making and fitting. Not to say buying more patterns is bad! Definitely not – I love picking up new patterns. But you shouldn’t feel like you always HAVE to buy a new pattern when you want a new silhouette or style.

Ok, so that brings us to today’s tutorial. In this video tutorial, I’ll show you how to increase the bum coverage of a bikini bottoms pattern. How much coverage you like is such a personal thing that knowing how to alter it can really help you make sure you love the swimsuits you make.

First, here’s what you’ll need:

  • bikini bottoms pattern you want to alter
  • extra pattern paper (or newspaper or printer paper)
  • paper scissors or rotary cutter
  • pen or pencil
  • straight edge ruler
  • optional: french curve ruler

Alright, let’s get into the tutorial:
