4 Reasons You Might be Getting Skipped Stitches

Ok, so here are the four main reasons you might be getting skipped stitches!

  1. The first reason – which is the most common – is that your needle is dull or bent. If you’ve been using the same needle for awhile you may just need to switch it for a new, sharp needle. So this is the first thing I would try – often it really is this simple!
  2. If changing your needle doesn’t work, the second reason could be that something is threaded wrong in your machine. It happens to all of us, no matter how long we’ve been sewing! So just try rethreading the whole thing – both the top thread and the bobbin thread. Because if something is threaded wrong, it can cause major issues – including skipped stitches.
  3. If rethreading still doesn’t solve your problem – it may be that the needle you are using is not the right type or size of needle for your project. It’s important to match the needle to your project – for example, use a jersey needle on jersey fabric, use a stretch needle on swim and activewear fabric, use a denim needle on denim, and so on – the type of needle makes a massive difference! You’ll also want to make sure that you’re using the right size of needle for your project – just make sure you’re not using an excessively large needle on thin fabric or vice versa.
  4. If none of those first 3 things has helped you solve your skipped stitches – the final thing to look at would be your thread. Now if you’re using a standard universal polyester thread this probably isn’t your issue. But if you’re using a different type of thread – like upholstery thread, woolly nylon, or embroidery thread – you’ll want to make sure that the thread is appropriate for your project and also matched with the right needle.
