Today I’ll be answering a really common question when it comes to sewing swimwear. Especially from those of you just getting started with sewing swimwear! And that is – do you need a serger to sew swimwear?

In the video below, I answer that question and give you some tips for sewing swimwear on a sewing machine!

And if you don’t want to watch a video and just want the main points – scroll on past the video for the bulletpoints version.

Do you need a serger to sew swimwear?

Main Points

  • So, do you need a serger to sew swimwear? The answer is no, but a serger will make the process faster and easier. So once you know you’ll be sticking with sewing swimwear and have lot’s of projects in the works you may want to consider getting one.
  • When sewing swimwear on a regular sewing machine, you’ll need to use either a zigzag stitch or a stretch stitch (lightning bolt stitch).
  • Test out your stitch settings on a scrap piece of your fabric BEFORE starting your swimsuit to make sure you get the settings right!
  • Here are some tips for adjusting the stitch width and length of your zigzag: 1) if your stitches pop when stretched, try shortening the length and slightly increasing the width; 2) if you get “laddering”, so horizontal threads showing on the outside of the seam when stretched, you will need to decrease the width of the stitch.
