In today’s blog post, I bring you one of my favorite projects ever! I was recently on a fun shopping trip with my wonderful mother in law and we stopped by JoAnn Fabrics. And of course, I can’t go in there without buying something…. so I found this super cozy teddy bear fleece fabric! The best part about this fabric is that the cozy fluffiness is on BOTH SIDES! Almost all the teddy bear fleece fabrics I’ve come across in the past have been one-sided – which is super disappointing because the side against your skin won’t be cozy.

Anyways, as I was waiting to get my fabric cut my mother in law found this Simplicity S9014 pattern (Simplicity Pattern S9014 Misses’ Knit Tops – Size A (XXS – XS – S – M – L – XL – XXL). *affiliate link* She thought it would be perfect for this fabric, and she was definitely right! So now we have matching wonderfully cozy sweaters!

For this project I made View B in a size large for both of us. I didn’t have to make any fitting adjustments at all. This pattern is super forgiving fit-wise, so if you’re looking for something easy to fit, give this one a try! The only adjustment I made was shortening the cowl neck by half. When I tried it with the full cowl neck, the fabric was too stiff and it just stuck up like a turtleneck up past my nose!

I’m really glad these sweaters turned out so well and I think we’ll both get lots of wear out of them. So now I’ll go into a more detailed review of the pattern if you’re interested.

Sizing

Like I mentioned above, I made a straight size Large for both of us and I think it held true to size. My measurements lined up between the Medium and Large (my hip was a Large and bust was a Medium) and I think the Large worked quite well for an oversized fit. So if you’re looking for something a bit more fitted, I would size down.

Sewing it up

This pattern is a really quick and pretty easy sew. The only part that is a bit challenging is the cowl neck – the directions don’t describe this step very well and the diagrams are confusing. I still am not 100% sure what the directions wanted me to do, but I ended up folding the collar down wrong sides together and sewing the seam allowances of the outer and inner collar together so that the inner collar would stay down. This is really hard to describe, so I’m sorry I didn’t get any photos! Anyways, I then sewed the raw edge of the inner part of the collar to the base of the neckline by hand. It was super easy to make the stitching invisible since the teddy bear fleece hides all the stitches!

I also hand sewed the hem and sleeve hems because I didn’t want a row of machine stitching on the outside of the fleece. The other part of sewing with this kind of fabric that is important is that after you sew a seam you use a pin to pull the fur around the seam out of the stitching. This is because when you sew it the fur is sucked into the seam and it looks kind of weird.

Here’s what one of my seams looked like before pulling the fur out of the seam:

I think this really does make a big difference!

Conclusions: Simplicity S9014

Did it turn out as expected based on the pattern envelope?

Yes it did. Of course the fabric I used was nothing like the light weight knits they were featuring on the pattern envelope, but it worked out pretty much as expected (other than needing to shorten the neck to accommodate my bulky fabric).

How challenging is it to sew?

This pattern is very easy and fast to sew – the only part that was hard to understand was the cowl neck, but I figured out a way to do it easily even if my way wasn’t what the instructions were asking for.

Would I sew it again?

Definitely! I think this is a great pattern that could be made in various fabrics and lengths to get some great basics for casual wear.

Overall rating

I’m going 4/5 on this one – I had to take one point away for the confusing instructions on constructing the cowl neck.
